The treatment of addiction with acupuncture has been used with great success since the 1970s when Michael Smith, M.D., at Lincoln Hospital in the Bronx New York used acupuncture as an alternative treatment to methadone, which was the standard of care at the time for the treatment of heroin addiction. This treatment protocol later became known as the NADA protocol. This is an acronym for National Acupuncture Detoxification Association. The NADA protocol is used to treat all types of addiction, i.e., smoking, drugs, alcohol, overeating, etc.
The NADA protocol as it is used today consists of insertion of acupuncture needles into five main points on each ear. Those points are: Kidney, Lung, Liver, Sympathetic, and the Shen Men (Spirits Gate) points. However, it is common practice in our office to add additional body points if indicated. Patients treated with this protocol report an improved sense of well-being, feel increased energy, while feeling more relaxed, improved mood, rest better, reduced anxiety, and crave less. To see if this protocol could help you, please call our office for a complimentary consultation.
